The British Association for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language (BATJ) was formed in March 1998, with the aim to encourage and promote Japanese language education in the UK, in particular by stimulating teaching and encouraging research in the field of language studies as an academic discipline. The Association's first conference was held in London in September 1998, at the Japan Foundation Nihongo Centre which co-hosted the conference.The Association admits individuals supporting its aims.
BATJ Consitution

The activities of the BATJ include

  • Holding an annual conference for the presentation of current research papers and to provide forum for exchanging ideas. It is planned to hold the conference at the end of summer/before the autumn term in September.

  • Organizing seminars and workshops in the field of Japanese language teaching and learning. Most workshops and seminars are open to non-members.

  • Establishing a network of teachers.

  • Gathering and disseminating information on Japanese language teaching and learning in the UK higher education.

  • Publishing newsletters and annual journal. BATJ membership includes newsletters and a copy of BATJ Journal.

  • eBATJ : BATJ members are networked via eBATJ mailing system.
